Ah, this is the most daunting, tedious task of starting your own online money-making adventure. I can’t call it a business. I just can’t. Not yet. You have to have customers to be doing business. If you aren’t being paid, there’s no business just yet. How do you get paid? You need customers. How do you get customers? You need traffic. You’ve heard all of this mumbo jumbo before, and some people would like to tell you that you need to pay them gargantuan sums of cash, or you won’t get the traffic you need.
Hogwash. There are opportunities abounding all over the internet for free, QUALITY traffic. I’m not talking about manual traffic exchangers. Though, you could go that route, if you want people to run down a 30 second timer on your page while they run down about 7 other manual traffic exchange timers simultaneously. Truth is, you don’t get much quality traffic with manual traffic exchanges. Most of the people on those are in it for the same things you are. You want traffic, and you don’t care what you gotta do to get that traffic… including ignoring other people’s pages that website owners tediously credited in those exchanges by clicking through the ad timers the same way you did. You see? It’s not rocket science. Nobody cares about your site on manual exchanges. Trust me, not worth your time if you’re trading your own hits for traffic. If you want to find a cheap traffic package, be my guest. But you can use your time better with other programs to garner some quality traffic.
Here are some ideas:
1. Entrecard - Have a blog? Simply sign up here, put the widget anywhere on your blog, and you’re in business. Visit other Entrecard owners’ blogs and “drop” your card on their page. A simple, one-click process that nets you 1 credit. Each credit is used towards buying advertising space on blogs which use Entrecard. A pretty nifty link exchange, except with 150×150 square, pretty graphic images.
2. Linkreferral - View 30 websites via the directory, post in the forums, favorite the sites you like, and review the ones you have something to say about. All of this adds into your site rating, which translates into your position in Linkreferral’s directory. The higher position you are, the more people will see your website. I’ve received a lot of quality hits from LR.
3. Comment on other Blogs - This is self-explanatory. Post a comment on someone’s blog. They can be extremely successful, somewhat successful, or just getting off the ground. One way or another, that blog owner is more than likely attempting to get the word out about his/her blog. When people start seeing their posts, they’ll see your commets. Depending whether or not what you had to say was interesting/valuable to the content, you could get tons of traffic this way by commenting on multiple people’s blogs.
4. Submit to Web Directories - I can’t stress this enough. Submit to web directories. Make this a practice by doing 5 or 6 a day. You can do a google search for “free directory submission” and you’ll find plenty of directories accepting new web submissions. This boosts your backlink count and increases your value in search engine eyes.
5. Take part in Social Communities - These can be forums, chat rooms, or social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook, and Bebo. My personal favorite is StumbleUpon. Here you can “stumble” websites you like. Similar to LinkReferral, when a site’s stumble rating goes up, the site’s exposure also increases. They have a nice system with keywords, and there are hundreds of other websites similar to SU. Try Digg, Del.icio.us, and Reddit.
There you have it. A simple guide for the common man on how to get quality traffic to your website. I would advise you also take part in forums like Namepros.com. Here you can earn NP$ by completing incentive offers from other forum members. If you stumble someone’s site, they may send you 3 or 4 NP$ which is the equivalent to roughly 8 cents. In return, you could offer NP$ that you earn for people to stumble your site. This method is highly recommended, and social networking traffic is probably about the best it gets. You have the possibility of gaining long-term viewers this way.
Over and out. By the way, if you want to take a break, check out my last post about a nifty poker website. No deposit, no credit card, and nothing but your e-mail is required to start competing against a million people for real cash prizes. Sheesh…
